Toronto Community Housing has adopted several green initiatives as part of its effort to improve the quality of life for its residents and staff and to support the City of Toronto’s goals in becoming a green city. These initiatives include improving recycling programs in its 300 different communities.
In partnership with the Toronto Environmental Alliance and Duegood, Public Interest conducted research into best practices in other cities and conducted focus groups with tenants and staff to understand their motivations for and barriers to recycling. This research was used to develop communications tools available in 19 languages along with an outreach strategy (and associated tools) to support community-based programs that will increase recycling.
The strength of the My Community Recycles program lies in the messages, posters, resources, educational material, and staff and tenant outreach programs that have been co-developed with tenants and staff to make the program’s goals achievable and to reflect the interests of those directly affected.
