Effie Vlachoyannacos

Effie Vlachoyannacos has worked on a variety of community outreach and engagement programs and is an active resident of Scarborough. As coordinator of the Scarborough Civic Action Network, she organizes the annual Scarborough Community Summit, facilitates issues-based working groups,and supports emerging campaigns such as the campaign to raise the minimum wage in Ontario to $10 per hour. Effie is also involved in Save Our Structures (SOS), a community engagement campaign in which she is working with tenants in Toronto CommunityHousing developments to address the issue of funding for much-needed capital repairs.

Accomplishments:

  • Prior to joining Public Interest, Effie was co-chair of the Scarborough Health Coalition (2005-2007), for which she conducted outreach activities and worked within the community to ensure that health care remains fair, accessible, and single-tiered.
  • Effie was also the volunteer coordinator and Greek outreach coordinator for St. Paul's L'Amoreaux Centre, working to ensure accessible services and day programs for senior citizens in Scarborough.
  • As a member of the Coalition of Communities to Save the Grace Hospital, Effie helped bring various communities together to fight to successfully keep a full-service hospital in north Scarborough.

Effie has also worked with the North York Working Women's Centre, and on a voter education campaign for the Centre for Social Justice. She is a graduate of York Universityand holds a Bachelor of Social Work and a Bachelor of Arts in political science.
